About

    Ueumdo (牛音島/우음도)

This small island, named Ueumdo because the sound of cows' cries could be heard from the mainland when strong winds blew, has an area of approximately 103 acres. As of 2001, its permanent population was only around 40 residents.

According to an interview with Yoon Young-bae, a former resident of Ueumdo, the island was once abundant with tidal flats and rich in marine resources, where people could freely gather clams. He wished for a life in harmony with nature, but in 1994, Ueumdo became part of the mainland due to the construction of the Sihwa Embankment.
